Selecting The Right Leather Hides
Everybody loves the way leather furniture looks and feels, but many do not understand that not all leather is made the same. We will discuss the different types and provide knowledge to ensure that you buy the right type of leather for your living space. There are three different types of leather hides: protected, semi-aniline and aniline. Each of these leathers are all genuine leather and all have advantages and disadvantages.
Protected - leather hides that has been dyed, pigmented or painted to ensure color consistency and provide protection against wear. In most cases a protective top coat chemical is applied to achieve even greater protection. This product is durable and made to last for years to come. Durability is the greatest advantage when selecting a protected leather. Use this type of leather on furniture that is located in high traffic areas as it will not scratch and will age very well. Children are very rough on things and if you have a family with kids this should be the type that you purchase. Protected leather is also recommended for automobiles as it will not fade if placed in direct sunlight. The only major disadvantage of having a protected leather is the feel. When the leather is painted and pigmented you lose the natural feel of leather. For some consumers the protection, wear and durability outweigh the feel and touch.
Semi-Aniline - An aniline that has a pigment base applied to give the leather an opaque color, then an aniline or pigment finish is applied by hand for a two-toned antique surface. In most cases a top coat is added for protection. The advantage of having a semi-aniline leather is you get more variety of looks and feel while having a somewhat durable product. Most semi-aniline leathers will have a unique finish such as a two-tone. These leathers will feel natural and provide a one-of-a-kind look. Although these leathers do have some protection the color may or may not fade if the piece of furniture is placed in direct sunlight. You can still use semi-aniline leathers in high traffic areas, just make sure they are not in direct sunlight.
Aniline - A type of leather dyed exclusively with soluble dyes without covering the surface with a topcoat paint or pigment. The resulting product retains the hide's natural surface with the grain. Referred to as pure aniline, aniline and naked leather. Aniline leathers are the most natural feeling leathers on the market and will be the softest and most supple. Furniture enthusiasts love this type of leather as it is a true product of mother nature. Aniline leathers are usually only dyed for color and that's it! No other finishes or chemicals are added to these leather giving you a work of art. While aniline leathers are more expensive and nicer they will scratch easily and are not ideal for high traffic areas. We suggest using this type of leather in a low traffic area and on furniture that might not be used everyday.
